Abstract

Introduction: Exclusive breastfeeding is a fundamental step in ensuring the health and survival of infants, and provides long-term benefits for mothers. Although the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding have been proven through numerous studies, exclusive breastfeeding rates in many regions in Indonesia, including Jakarta, still do not meet the standards set by the Indonesian government.

Objective:  This study was conducted to determine the factors that most influence the provision of exclusive breastfeeding in working mothers at Hospital X Jakarta.

Methods: The quantitative research design used a descriptive correlational method through a cross-sectional approach. The population in the study was 70 people. The sample size was 70 breastfeeding mothers, obtained through total sampling. The four variables in the study were: breastfeeding knowledge, family support, breastfeeding experience, and exclusive breastfeeding. Chi-square tests and binary logistic regression were used in the statistical analysis.

Results: Bivariate analysis showed that only family support variable had a significant relationship with exclusive breastfeeding (p = 0.003). The knowledge variable (p = 0.027) was not included in the multivariate analysis because it did not meet the theoretical significance limit of p < 0.025. The results of the binary logistic regression test showed that mothers who did not receive family support were 0.22 times less likely to provide exclusive breastfeeding compared to mothers who received family support (Exp(B) = 0.220; p = 0.003).

Conclusion: This study concludes that family support is the most influential factor in the success of exclusive breastfeeding compared to breastfeeding knowledge and breastfeeding experience.
